Nutrition Improvement Program for Rural Compulsory Education history

In 2007, CDRF launched the Program of Nutrition Improvement Program for Rural Compulsory Education Students. In 2008, Premier Wen made important instruction on CDRF’s Research Report for this program required relevant government departments to strive to improve nutrition status of rural poor students. In 2010, Chinese government allocated over 10 billion yuan for living subsidies of rural boarding students.

In January 2011, Premier Wen again made important comments on CDRF’s assessment report of school feeding mechanisms in Guangxi, Yunnan, Qinghai and Ningxia. With the help of CCTV and other media, CDRF succeeded in raising the public awareness of this issue and making further progress.

In April, CDRF convened the international symposium on school feeding in China’s western rural areas with the theme of “Making School Meals Work”. Based on CDRF’s empirical research and assessment, this symposium inspired in-depth discussions about international practice of school feeding, China’s exploration for school feeding, and mechanisms to universally improve students’ nutrition among western rural areas. Mr. Lu Mai summed up the essence of this conference and submitted to the central government Suggestions for Universalizing School Feeding in Western Rural Schools, which received instruction from the State Councilor Madam. Liu Yandong.

In October, the State Council decided to devote 16 billion yuan annually to provide school meals for 26 million students in poverty-stricken areas. CDRF then launched its second round of assessment for its implementation in Guangxi, Yunnan, Qinghai and Ningxia, and conducted a field investigation on Ningxia’s pilot of free lunch project. Now the assessment report has completed.
