Social Integration of Migrant Children and Construction of Harmonious Communities

China’s rapid urbanization gives rise to over 20 million migrant children in cities. The majority of these children are faced with many problems of education, health, poverty and social marginalization, which hinders their behavior, professional skills, physical and mental development. In order to explore innovative social management and accelerate migrant children’s integration into urban life, CDRF started a project of “Caring for Migrant Children and Promoting Social Integration” in 2010 to encourage social harmony as well as sustainable economic and social development. So far, in collaboration with Xihua Police Station, Chuanfang Resident Committee, Women’s Federation in Xishan District and Kunming University, CDRF has started 5 sub-projects including “Public Welfare Kindergarten”, “Extracurricular Tutors”, “Community Youth Center”, “Free Vocational Institutions” and “Mommy School” in Chuanfang community of Kunming, Yunnan province. In addition, CDRF plans to launch similar projects in Xiaojiahe Village in Beijing and other places. A competition of innovative public service is also underway which will sum up successful experience in encouraging social integration.

So far, CDRF has launched social experiments in several communities of Beijing and Kunming. Ten organizations from different parts of country won the awards of CDRF’s contest of public service. Around 20,000 children benefit directly from the program, in addition to indirect beneficiaries of 100,000 migrant workers.
