Chen Xingjia, Founder of Shenzhen Henghui Children Charity Foundation, Visits and Exchanges Views with CDRF

On April 24, Chen Xingjia, founder of Shenzhen Henghui Children Charity Foundation, visited CDRF, organized the lecture themed "'Eliminating Poverty due to Illness' in Modern China by Uniting Love, and shared his practical experience in fostering transparency and effectiveness of charity.

Chen Xingjia suggested that poverty because of illness was the most important reason for poverty in China, and that "a serious illness can reduce ordinary people to poor people." According to data released by the National Health and Family Planning Commission in 2016, the statistics on filing and registration of poor people by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development indicated that the number of impoverished households who were reduced to or return to poverty because of illness represented 42% of the total filed and registered impoverished households in China.

Chen Xingjia reckoned that poverty due to illness was mainly caused by three problems, i.e. services for patients, enhancement in doctors' capabilities, and improvement in policy assessment. Accordingly, non-profit organizations can play two roles in poverty alleviation in healthcare. First, more policies should be put in place; second, piloting of policy innovation should be advanced through social innovation.

Lu Mai, Vice President and Secretary General of the CDRF, Deputy Secretary General Fang Jin, and some staff members of the CDRF attended the lecture.
