International Symposium on ESG and Sustainable Development was held in Beijing
On April 21,2023, International Symposium on ESG and Sustainable Development hosted by the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) was successfully held in The Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
The seminar aims to implement the new development concept, promote exchanges and mutual learning between ESG practices of Chinese and foreign enterprises, and promote the formation of an internationally accepted ESG system with Chinese characteristics. Well-known experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and leaders of international organizations gathered to discuss and share the new trends of ESG development at home and abroad, and offer ideas to the sustainable development of China and the world.
Fang Jin, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation, said in a welcome speech, sustainable development is a global issue that need joint action, China Development Research Foundation will play its role as a think tank and bridge, to promote ESG and sustainable development.
During the keynote speech session, Bruce Flatt, CEO of Brookfield Asset Management, Andrew Cross, CFO of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Zhu Guangyao, Former Vice Minister of Ministry of Finance, Zhou Yanli, Former Vice Chairman of China Insurance Regulatory Commission, Wang Yiming, Vice Chairman of China Center for International Economic Exchanges and Former Vice President of Development Research Center of the State Council, Peng Huagang, Former Member of the CPC Committee and Former Secretary General of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, made speeches, in-depth discussion of the challenges and opportunities brought about by ESG ideas and practices, the establishment of ESG standards combining national conditions and world conditions to serve China’s modernization, enhance the capacity of value investment, promote the construction of a new pattern of responsible investment development in the insurance industry, enabling enterprises in their green transformation and sustainable development, encourage central government enterprises to play their leading role better and other important issues.
In order to fully demonstrate the excellent practices of ESG of domestic and foreign enterprises, guide enterprises to compare and learn from each other, and better promote higher quality development, the seminar invites Chinese and foreign enterprises to share their case. During the round-table discussion session, Yu Jiantuo, Deputy Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation, Jia Kang, Founding Dean of China Academy of New Supply-side Economics, Former Director-General of Financial Science Research Institute, Ministry of Finance, Ma Xianfeng, CEO of China Chengxin Investment Group Company Limited, Zhu Xufeng, Professor and Dean of the School of Public and Management of Tsinghua University and Executive Dean of Institute for Sustainable Development Goals of Tsinghua University, Sheng Lei, Deputy Director-General of the Investment Research Institute of Academy of Macroeconomic Research, Liu Zhiyang, Professor of College of Business and Vice Dean of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE), talked about ESG helping to achieve the Dual Carbon goals, how will fiscal and tax policies improve the performance of ESG, building an ESG investment ecosystem, ESG promoting the low-carbon development of enterprises, ESG's potential in industrial chain digitalization and greening, infrastructure investment, financing promotion, small and medium-sized enterprise development, ESG and social entrepreneurship and innovation opportunities. The round-table discussion was hosted by Li Fan, Director of Research Department I of CDRF.
