China Child Development Report 2023 Released

On April 19, 2023, the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) released the China Child Development Report 2023: Promote the high-quality development of rural children in Beijing.

Officials from relevant departments, experts from academia, representatives of social organizations, representatives of international organizations in China, and representatives of the press and media partook in the conference.

The 20th Party Congress made a major strategic plan to promote Chinese-style modernization. Developing talents through child development and implementing the strategy of developing the country through science and education are important contents and ways to realize Chinese-style modernization. Children are the hope of the nation and the future of the country. At present, China has made remarkable progress in child development, but there is still a gap between rural and urban children, and they still face challenges in the areas of early parenting, education, nutrition and health, and child protection.

To study the current landscape, opportunities and challenges of rural children's development in the context of rural revitalization, CDRF conducted and completed the China Child Development Report 2023: Promote the high-quality development of rural children (hereinafter referred to as the Report), aiming to provide scientific consultation for the formulation of policies on high-quality development of rural children.

At the launch, Huang Chengwei, director of the China Center for Poverty Alleviation and Development, pointed out that the research on rural children's development is significant and far-reaching, and that promoting high-quality development of children requires the support of targeted policies. As China transitions from poverty eradication to rural revitalization, we need to strengthen children's high-quality development.

According to Fang Jin, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the CDRF, today's rural children will enter the labor market by 2050. Their ability to build society and achieve personal wellbeing will depend to a considerable extent on the conditions of nurturing, nutrition, protection and education they receive in the present. The quality development of rural children will be the cornerstone of the drive to achieve the ambitious blueprint of Chinese-style modernization.

Liu Hongyan, deputy director of the China Population and Development Research Center, said that the development of children in rural areas in China suffers from insufficient awareness, inadequate resources, insufficient investment, and a nurturing environment that needs to be improved. Doing a good job of child development in rural areas requires national policies, financial investment and the participation of the whole society.

At the launch event, two authors of the main report, Professor Li Shi, Director of the Institute of Sharing and Development of Zhejiang University, and Professor Wang Sangui of Renmin University of China, gave a detailed introduction to the content of the Report.

Lu Mai, former Vice Chairman of China Development Research Foundation (CDRF), MiSaki Ueda, Social Policy Chief of UNICEF China, Yang Dongping, Professor of Beijing University of Technology, and Cai Jianhua, Senior Advisor of Child Development Research Institute of CDRF, discussed "Promoting Quality Development of Rural Children" based on the report.
