CDRF Visits Zhuhai, Guangdong for Research on Commercial Health Insurance

On June 8-9, 2023, a team from the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) went to Zhuhai, Guangdong to conduct research on commercial health insurance. The team was led by Yu Jiantuo, Deputy Secretary General of CDRF. The team was joined by Jin Chenggang, Professor of School of Social Development and Public Policy of Beijing Normal University, Chen Chengcheng, Associate Professor of School of Public Administration of Beijing Information Science and Technology University, personnel from China Insurance and Social Security Research Center of Fudan University, Dong FuReng Institute of Economics and Social Development of Wuhan University, School of Finance of Nankai University and relevant staff from the Research Department II of CDRF.


The team held a discussion on commercial health insurance with experts and scholars from Zhuhai Healthcare Security Bureau, China Life, Beihang University, and Kevin Haninger, Vice President of PhRMA. At the seminar, Wang Xia, the second-level researcher of Zhuhai Medical Security Bureau, talked about the innovation and pioneering elements of Zhuhai's additional supplementary medical insurance program; Cheng Shuiping, the deputy general manager of the health insurance department of China Life Zhuhai Branch, spoke about the operation of the Zhuhai supplementary program; and Zhang Xiaotian, the former deputy director and researcher of Zhuhai Human Resources and consultant of Zhuhai Medical Insurance Research Association, introduced to the team the current status and development of commercial health insurance in the multi-leveled healthcare security system in Zhuhai. Yu Jiantuo gave concluding remarks.


The team also went to service windows of Zhuhai Healthcare Security Center and The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, and conducted research and discussion on the basic operations of local basic healthcare insurance, critical illness insurance and commercial health insurance, and gained an in-depth understanding of the emerging model of local commercial health insurance, its development prospects and current challenges. The visit provided the team with a vivid reference and practical inspiration for the research on commercial health insurance.
