The Fifth China-US Symposium on Building the Financial System of the 21st Century, co-organized by the CDRF and Harvard Law School, was held in Shanghai from September 5 to 7, 2008. Well-known experts, regulators and practitioners from the American and Chinese financial sectors were invited to exchange views on economic and financial situation, innovations and reforms in the two countries and hot issues related to changes in international financial market, to discuss ways to effectively promote the development of the Chinese capital market, and to promote cooperation between the two sides in government regulation, corporate governance, information sharing, academic research and other fields.

Based on the changes and hot issues in the financial sector, the topics for the fifth annual China-U.S. Symposium were:

1. Turmoil in the Financial Markets

2. Consumer Credit in China and the United States

3. Issues in Public Sector and Private Sector Investments: Sovereign Wealth Funds, QDII, Private Equity
