2013

The 10th China-US Symposium on Building the Financial System of the 21st Century was held in Chicago of the U.S. from September 11 to September 13, 2013.

The symposium was an important annual gathering to promote communication between the American and Chinese financial sectors. Senior officials from the government agencies and regulatory departments of the two countries delivered speeches at the symposium. Mr. Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, and Mr. Zhao Weiping, Consul General of China in Chicago, attended the meeting and Mayor Emanuel gave the opening speech. Well-known financial institutions in China and the United States, especially local financial institutions in Chicago, offered a full range of support.

The number of participants reached a record high this year. More than 100 well-known experts, regulators and practitioners from the financial circles of the two countries exchanged views on shadow banking, cross-border capital flow, RMB internationalization, SME financing and other topics. The symposium adopts a well-established and widely used communication model consisting of plenary sessions and panel discussions. It provides a communication platform to experts to deliver speeches and have discussions to exchange views. In sub-plenary sessions, speakers are required to give a summary of their speeches to help the audience understand the topics better. This year, the way a speech is delivered at the symposium was changed and a well-known host was invited to interview guests. It was an exploratory effort on the organizer’s part.

Feedback from attendees showed their satisfaction with the effort of the organizer and willingness to attend the next symposium in China.
